John Quincy Adams was quite the guy. Before he was President, he traveled all over Europe–he had the ultimate homeschool experience.

By the time he was 20, Q knew several languages, had translated the New Testament, and had a prolific blog (well, he had a diary).

While he might have wished to stay home, his dad - John Adam - encouraged him to take his experience on the road. George Washington appointed him as Minister to the Netherlands at the age of 26.

Q served as James Monroe's Secretary of State and wrote the document that we now know as the Monroe Doctrine.

All that to say . . .If there was a Foreign Affairs All Star team from the early 1800s, The Q would be batting clean-up.

One of the biggest perks about winning a Presidential election is that you don't have to sit next to that guy who takes his shoes off on the plane anymore.

In this episode we talk about . . .

*The history of the aircraft US Presidents fly in.

*If your name is "Roosevelt" and you're the President, you're going to fly!

*How they came up with the name "Air Force One."

*Where can you go aboard an Air Force One today.

*How much does it cost to operate the Chief Executive's airplane?

*Who gets to fly on Air Force One (and what happens if they put you in the back).

*Do Presidents ever still fly commercial aircraft?

*Why you don't want to mess around with this plane.

In this episode we finally talk about what you want to hear - the Lincoln/Douglass debates!

Stephen Douglas was a man who constantly found himself walking a very thing line on almost every subject he touched. If he said one thing he would anger one set of people - but if he said the opposite, someone else would be upset instead!

Join us in this episode as we again talk about Stephen Douglas!

The Douglas/Lincoln debates are some of the most famous debates in all of American history! But before he debated Lincoln, Stephen Douglas had built quite the resume on his own.

A semi-national leader for the Democrats as a Senator and statesmen, Stephen Douglas is a truly interesting character in our past. He was a wealthy landowner and was hugely influential on many fronts.

James Monroe is one of the only guys in history who was able to win two elections in a row with almost no competition at all. He even ran completely unopposed in his second attempt!

Monroe not only persevered through a tough time in our history during the War of 1812 - he did it with one of the most bipartisan cabinets ever! While we don't agree with all of his policies and beliefs, you can't deny that Monroe had a wonderful effect on the United States of America.

James Monroe is an easy president to miss. He's not a super controversial figure, but he's also not a guy who just lets people walk all over him. In this episode we discuss the early life of the last Founding Father to be the leader of our country, as well as the last president to have fought during the Revolutionary War.

Ambassador to France, Secretary of State, Secretary of War, Delegate to the Virginia House, United States Senator and Governor of Virginia are just a few of Monroe's many job titles that we discuss in this episode!

On the last episode we talked about how the Bill of Rights and subsequently the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution came about. This time around we talk about each one of those 10 in a bit more depth.

A big thank you to our boy James Madison who fought to make it all happen.

Way back before the Bill of Rights was even written, the writers of the Constitution knew there was going to be one! These 10 Amendments to our governing document lead the way through troubled times and precarious situations on a regular basis.

However, we don't go very deep in to what the actual amendments within the Bill of Rights entail during this episode. That's next time. Instead, we talk about the history of, necessity for, and influencers behind the nation's 10 most popular amendments.

In this episode you’ll hear about Madison’s time as President and some of the challenges he faced such as:

*getting his cabinet nominees approved
*paying for a war despite not wanting a national bank
*not having Thomas Jefferson around

We also talk about his rockstar wife, Dolley, and how she managed to keep things going in spite of some of the men in her life after James’ time in office.

James Madison is often overlooked - and no, that's not a short joke. You may know him as our fourth president, but Madison accomplished a tremendous amount of good for the well-being of our new country here in the USA aside from the office of the presidency. From being the Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights to being an influential delegate in foreign affairs, we think James Madison deserves his very own episode.

The Alien and Sedition Acts are something we've talked all around but never dove into! Some people might think it's just one big law. Instead, it's four different laws combined into a type of government approved speech suppression with a side of nationalism thrown in. If you're in the mood for a good head scratcher, this is the episode for you!

Often mocked, but immensely valuable, is the office of the Vice President. It's true, the biggest job of the VP may be being the President of the Senate (which is essentially just breaking ties) but the VP is a super important position with a very interesting past.

We all know that Thomas Jefferson (or, as we like to call him, TJ) was the president of the United States, right? Well he also lived quite the interesting life before he got to the highest office in the land as well! This episode is all about TJ in his early years up until the man earned himself a chapter in all of our history books.

Daniel Sickles was really influential in American History, and there's a pretty good chance you've never even heard of him. We hadn't even heard of him until just recently and we thought he was pretty interesting.

He shot Francis Scott Key's son. He should have been court-martialed. He disobeyed direct military orders. He kept his severed leg preserved. He served in public office. And he also convinced the USA to preserve Gettysburg.

What an interesting guy...

Though John Adams had a very active early life and did many things to help shape our country, we haven't talked much about his impact as Vice President and President of the United State! Well, fear not. We're going to do just that.

In this episode you will hear about Adams' ascent to the highest political offices in the land (after he helped create them) and learn all about his struggles with having the "boring" job of Vice President.
